A very well written book about the dynamic of a Chinese-American family during the 1970s. It centers around the death of one of the daughters (I am not spoiling any of it, it’s on the first page of the book) and every other character’s reaction to it. The story is told in the present and the past so subtly – almost like a dance – allowing the readers to get to know the family members deeply and to understand their actions and reactions, to feel compassion for them. Celeste Ng does a magnificent job delineating them and making them multidimensional. A very short and enjoyable book.
